Getting to know a Travel blogger : Our Escape Clause

“Hey! My name is Kate and I (along with my husband Jeremy) am a travel blogger over at Our Escape Clause. We have been on an open-ended travel journey since May 2016, when we left our home in Texas for what was supposed to be a six-month round-the-world trip.

Since then, we’ve crossed dozens of destinations off our wish list, and added hundreds more. We’ve spent time in Europe, Southeast Asia, the USA, and backpacked from Mexico to Panama (missing only El Salvador along the way).

We have found that for this phase of our lives, the nomadic lifestyle is exactly what we want so instead of getting “normal” jobs again, Jeremy found a great remote position that will allow us to continue our full time travels indefinitely!

This summer, we’re exploring New England. This fall? Probably Europe, but don’t ask us to promise we still haven’t made it to South America as outlined in our original six month trip!

When we married young, we weren’t exactly sure what our lives were going to look like but however much we daydreamed about travel, the truth is that we were too cautious to believe those dreams would actually come true anytime soon. Luckily, we came to our senses!

What got you into blogging and how long ago was this?

Truthfully, I’ve wanted to blog since I was in school, but never felt like I had anything to blog about: a straight lifestyle blog didn’t really appeal to me, and I couldn’t decide what else to focus on.

Then, on September 27, 2015, my Jeremy and I officially decided that our long term travel dreams were going to happen in our 20’s, rather than at some vague point in the far off future and that was the day I decided to start a blog.

I went live with my first post about 6 months later on March 10, 2016, and haven’t looked back since.

Fav destination and why?

Hardest question ever, as all of us travel lovers know!

My favorite countries to travel in so far are Slovenia, Croatia, Thailand, Mexico, and the USA. I normally leave off the last one, since it’s home, but really my home country has a lot going for it in the travel department!

Blogging tip

Do it because you love it.

There are plenty of stories out there of people getting rich from blogging, but if that’s your goal–do something else. The passion and adoration for both your subject matter and your blog itself has to sustain you through more hours than you’ll ever want to count of writing, photo editing, learning and perfecting SEO, networking, and more–and you still may never make a dollar from it.

I never intended for my blog to support my lifestyle (which is not to say I don’t like having a little bit of a side income from it or won’t work toward making more!), and I fully believe that makes it easier not only to keep my blog going, but also ensures that I keep Our Escape Clause authentic and true to what I want it to be at all times.

Dream trip

It changes all the time! But right now, in terms of really amazing, over-the-top trips, I tend to daydream about: going on a luxurious safari in southern Africa, soaking up the beauty of the islands of the South Pacific, cruising through Antarctica, and trekking through the Himalayas.

Pet peeve about travelling

Honestly (and yes, this totally sounds pretentious), long term travel beats a lot of pet peeves out of you. Things that drove me crazy before we started our long term travels (like nausea-inducing bus rides or listed times for transportation and tours being mere suggestions in many parts of the world) now just feel like part of the ride!

That being said, none of us are at our best when we’re sleepy–I’m definitely still known to grumble if people are being loud near where we are sleeping in the middle of the night! Luckily, we can usually limit those nights by picking quiet places to stay via reviews.

Favourite travel blogger

Oh, there are so many! I read tons of travel blogs for inspiration, for amusement, for thought-provoking essays, or even just to stare at their pretty photos.

Many of the big names get plenty of love, though, so I’ll give a shout out to my pal Allison at Eternal Arrival I love her attitude and her writing style!
