I have always known that a healthy diet means a healthy body and mind. The best sort of diet includes all the necessary vitamins our bodies require to function properly.
Disclaimer : Please note I am not a medical professional and have found this information from doing my own research for my personal health conditions. If you would think your body may be lacking in vitamins, please get medical advice and the same before you start taking any supplements.
However if your body is low or even high on a particular vitamin it can start to cause health implications which I wasn’t really aware of until I started having regular blood tests for cancer treatment.
A nutritional deficiency occurs when the body doesn’t absorb or get from food the necessary amount of a nutrient. Deficiencies can lead to a variety of health problems. These can include digestion problems, skin disorders, stunted or defective bone growth, and even dementia.
Signs that your body could be lacking a certain vitamin
- Hair loss could be an iron deficiency
- Burning sensation on hands or tongue could be lack of B12
- Wounds slow to health need to increase vit C
- Bone pain vit D
- Irregular heartbeat deficiency in calcium other symptoms the body is lacking in calcium is Twitches around your face and mouth. Calcium works with muscles to help them contract properly.
- Muscle cramps. Without enough calcium, the muscles do not fully relax.
- Fractures. Calcium is needed for strong bones. Without it, bone loss, or osteoporosis, can lead to more fractures. https://www.rush.edu/health-wellness/discover-health/6-signs-nutrient-deficiency
Anaemia
Anaemia is a common condition if your body is lacking certain vitamins such as iron and then it cannot produce red blood cells. Red blood cells are needed to get oxygen to the lungs.
I suffered with anaemia and I was required to go onto iron supplements and vitamin B12.
Vitamin B12 is also good for helping the produce to produce energy and is sometimes referred to as the energy vitamin.
I have taken b12 in the past when I have been traveling as I read that it reduced mosquito bites but I am not sure if that is true as I ended up getting bitten just as much.
B12 is found in meat dairy and fish so if you are on a began diet it is possible you could be low on this particular supplement.
Side effects of being anaemic
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Pale or yellowish skin
- Irregular heartbeats
- Weight loss
- Numbness or tingling in your hands and feet
- Muscle weakness
- Personality changes
- Unsteady movements
- Mental confusion or forgetfulness
Vitamin C
I have always been aware of vitamin C. When you have a cold or feeling run down you are advised to top your body up with vit C a lot of cold and flu medications will have vit C in them and at this time I will often take vit C supplements.
Good sources of vitamin C
- oranges and orange juice.
- red and green peppers.
- strawberries.
- blackcurrants.
- broccoli.
- brussels sprouts.
- potatoes.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones. It helps the body maintain the right levels of calcium in order to regulate the development of teeth and bones.
A lack of this nutrient can lead to stunted or poor bone growth. Osteoporosis, caused by a lack of calcium and vitamin D, can lead to porous and fragile bones that break very easily.
My cancer has spread to my bones and I am having regular bone injections to reduce the risk of fractures and osteoporosis which can also be brought on by chemotherapy I am having vit d supplements.
Foods with vitamin D include:
- fish liver
- Oils
- fatty fish
- mushrooms
- egg yolks
- liver
The best source of vitamin D is sunlight which is why I think I feel well when I am travelling and getting lots of sun and I feel a little depressed during the winter when I have had less exposure to the sun.
You don’t need a lot just 5 to 30 minutes of midday sun exposure twice a week on the face, arms, neck, or back can provide you with enough vitamin D. Obviously don’t forget the sunscreen if going out in the sun.
There are so many other vitamins that the body requires these are the most important to me at the moment during my cancer treatment.
Tests to help regarding vitamin deficiencies
If you are based in the USA you can have a vitamin deficiency test to find out if your body is lacking anything essential which can then be addressed and any side effects you were suffering should subside.
The health labs team has developed full lab testing panels for those interested in living a more plant-based diet and for those looking to get or maintain an overall healthier lifestyle.
The vegan panel reveals what meats or animal products are causing their body irritation or what nutrients they lack that are more popular with a plant-based diet while our nutritional panel tests common deficiencies in a broader diet.
As well these tests are more accessible to the public here in the U.S. versus needing to go through a doctor first (which for us, can be very pricey).
