How to Eat Paleo While Traveling
When you follow a specific diet, sticking to it when you travel can be a bit of a task.
The Paleolithic diet, also known as the Paleo diet, is a modern ‘fad’ diet that requires you to eat food that was thought to be available to us in the Paleolithic era. Examples of these foods include eggs, fish, meat, fruits, vegetables, seeds, herbs, nuts and oils. It is said to be the world’s healthiest diet as it is full of fiber, whole foods and healthy fats.
Luckily, with this diet, you aren’t too restricted with what you can eat. However, this doesn’t mean that it is easy to stick to when you go away, so here are some tips on how to stick to your paleo diet while you travel.
Prepare Some Snacks
It is a great idea to prepare and bring snacks with you when you are out and about or even while you are heading between places. This will ensure that you have food on hand no matter where you go, just in case the only food you have available while you are out isn’t suitable. It also stops you from being hungry and will save you money.
Make sure you have a variety of options available to stop you from breaking your diet. For example, have sweet and savory options and maybe even stuff that you can heat up. Bring some things you are familiar with plus some new options to mix it up a little. You can check this paleo food list if you are unsure about what to prepare.
Register Your Dietary Requirements
You should look at registering your dietary requirements with your airline, especially if you know you will be on a long flight. When you have a long flight, you are guaranteed to be served a meal, and nothing is worse than getting a hot meal you can’t eat when you are on a plane for a long period of time.
In order to avoid facing this issue and ensure you will have something you can eat on the plane, you should submit your restrictions to your airline online. The flight attendants will be aware of your requests and should confirm them when you get on-board. The food you get served will be prepared fresh and will usually be a lot better than the normal offerings.
Research Your Accommodation
The place you decide to stay when you are away will determine the food that you will be eating. You need to know whether you are planning to eat the food served at your accommodation, cook your own food or primarily go out to eat.
If you choose to eat the food at your accommodation, you need to research what food they have available and serve each day. You should inform the owners if you are staying somewhere like an Airbnb. If you are planning to go out to eat, then look at the restaurants that surround the accommodation and look into the native cuisine.
Learn Some of the Native Language
Learning some of the native language is a great thing to do before you travel. If you want to try or remain Paleo during your travels, make sure you know and understand the words of the foods you can and can’t eat. When you have a baseline understanding of the ingredients you can and can’t have, then you will know what you should avoid when you are out and about on your vacation.
If you are finding it hard to learn and remember the words it is a good idea to write a list. This way, you will always have the words to hand and you can compare the words to the stuff on the menu or in the food stores and show it to staff if you need help.
You need to make sure you go travelling with an open mind. Make sure you are looking after yourself, like staying hydrated, sleeping enough, relaxing and exercising while you are away. You need to go into this vacation with an open and realistic outlook on your diet as well as other things. Make sure you do plenty of research so you can understand the culture you will be immersing yourself into and what foods will be readily available to you.
