It is nearly my favourite time of year, I love December and the countdown to Christmas. I get to watch loads of Christmas movies, snuggle under a duvet on the sofa and the best bit is opening my advent calender every day to see what treat I am getting.
Advent calendars are not just for kids there are some perfect adult advent calendars and even if you dont like chocolate there is a option out there for you.
Why do we have advent calendars?
Advent means “arrival or coming” in Latin so its for when Santa is coming, well that’s what I used to use it to countdown to but now I am a little older I just like the treat you can get in advent calendars. Its actually more to do with the Christians celebrating the arrival of Jesus.
In Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden there is also a tradition of having a so-called Julekalender (Swedish: Julkalender, Finnish: Joulukalenteri, Icelandic: Jóladagatal; the local word for a Yule – or Christmas – calendar, even though it actually is an Advent calendar) in the form of a television or radio show, starting on December 1 and ending on Christmas Eve (December 24) (source : Wikipedia)

Make your own advent calendar
These are great you buy one and it will last for years to come and the best bit is you can fill it will all of your favourite things. I remember doing this one year with some housemates, we all contributed to the sweets and it was great to have a different sweetie everyday.

I love this idea now I just need to get a pet, although a dog is not just for Christmas. I would love to have a pet doggy but with travelling would be unfair on the little fella.
