New study reveals most expensive destinations for bucket-list vacations in 2026

Traveling is a great leisure activity, but it can often get expensive, especially when visiting a remote area or booking a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. A new study has revealed the top ten most expensive destinations for travelers in 2026, with the top location at about $30,000.

The travel insurance marketplace Squaremouth released a study listing the most expensive destinations for travelers in 2026; Antarctica emerged as the most expensive place for a bucket-list vacation, with an average trip costing $27,195.

How a trip to Antarctica turns expensive for travelers

Squaremouth’s study compiled travel insurance costs alongside trip duration. It also calculated the average expense per day for the destinations.

People who have traveled to Antarctica reportedly spend an average of 18 days on vacation, with an average per-day spend of about $1,511. Major factors driving the high prices include international flights, expedition cruises, and the logistics of reaching the remote continent.

However, it all feels worth it after wanderers see penguin colonies, seals, and spectacular icebergs; they can even enjoy kayaking and camping.

Two other expensive vacation destinations behind Antarctica

Botswana holds the number-two position, with an average cost of $24,411 for a 16-day trip and an approximate per-day expense of $1,526. The place is widely recognized for the wildlife experience it offers through safaris across Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta, where spectators can see lions, elephants, and other wildlife.

Rwanda clinches third on the list with a 15-day trip costing $24,138, averaging about $1,609 per day. That said, the destination also has the highest average daily cost in the entire list.
