We are back from Australia
I am back from our trip to Australia and Fiji and had a great time. I was surprised at how much I loved Melbourne I can definitely see why it is voted the most liveable city in the world. Whilst I was doing the research for this trip I read so many great travel blogs that I know I need to explore more of the country but we were limited with time. After reading The Travelling Toms Adelaide travel guide this is now on my list along with Brisbane and Perth.
It was my mums 60th Birthday and we had 5 nights in Sydney, 5 nights in Melbourne and 8 nights in Fiji. We celebrated her birthday with a McDonalds, not the best meal to have on a special occasion but we were in Suva and it was a public holiday and the only place open was McDonalds. We made up for it the next night though when we got to the DoubleTree Hilton with some fizz.
The idea of this trip was to visit an island in Fiji called Levuka.
Holiday in Fiji
When my dad was in the Merchant Navy he visited this island and always said it was very special. Now I always remember him mentioning Fiji but didn’t know it was this island and to be honest I am quite surprised as I thought it didn’t have much to offer. Maybe we missed something major but most of the island work in a local tuna canning factory and the town stinks of fish, there were no nice beaches and the people were not that friendly. But one of the highlights of this trip was going over to Levuka in a sea plane. This was my first time in a little plane and the views of the coral and the bright green sea was amazing and worth going to a fishy smelling island just to do the flight.
We toured a bit of Viti Luva which is the main island visiting Nadi, Denarau and Suva then we had a few days chilling at the Double Tree Hilton which was on its own island of Sonaisali.
My mum was truly spoilt here. She received a birthday gift of local spa products, a free massage, birthday cake a bottle of wine and they even sang happy birthday to her. We got upgraded to a King Bure on the beach as the original room we were in had faulty air conditioning. I got to have the massage because it is not her cup of tea and it was brilliant, well it is not often I am disappointed with a massage anyway.
Holiday in Australia
I wasn’t that keen on Sydney I thought it was very overrated and expensive but as mentioned before I fell in love with Melbourne I could really see myself living there. We crammed so much into this trip and I cannot wait to share it all with you but here is a rundown of what we got up to, come back in a few weeks when I will be sharing in more detail.

UK to Australia Flight
We were lucky to get a great deal on a business class flight to Australia and a premium economy flight back with Vietnam airlines. I am so glad my mum got to go business for such a long flight as it was her special birthday. On the way out, we had a 15-hour stopover in Ho Chin Minh and the airline provides a free city tour and hotel which was great as it broke the flight up. However, on the way home we only had a 3-hour stopover in Hanoi and by the time we had gone through security again and looked around the shops it was time to board the flight. Even in premium I was comfortable I don’t think I would have liked a straight through flight not that they do it yet anyway.

I was determined not to get Jet lag and I succeeded I feel fine and I have been home now for 5 days. I got some jet lag prevention pills at the airport and made myself stay awake when I got back to the UK until it was a decent hour to go to bed. I am not sure if it was the pills or not sleeping that prevented me getting jet lag but something worked and fingers crossed it doesn’t hit me now.
Anyway, my mum had a great holiday and that was the main thing as I wanted to make her birthday special. Now I have to prepare for my trip in a few days to USA to see how they celebrate Halloween.
