Country House Bristol : Live like a Lord and Lady of the Manor

Country House Bristol

Backwell House Farleigh Road, Backwell BS48 3QA

I didn’t realise there could be such a special country house near Bristol. Just a short journey from the city centre and you are in magnificent countryside and will discover this beautiful country manor that has been turned into a luxury hotel. This used to be a family home which is now a hotel so if you want to see what it is like to live as a lord and lady of the manor then this is the place to stay.

I love the quirky décor in this guesthouse, a lot of the furniture was collected from auctions and it has such a country manor feel to it. Everywhere you look is something different. Even in the bathroom where they have a sink made from an old suitcase.

I visited the hotel to try their new menu as part of the Bristol bloggers and influencer group and I was lucky to get to spend the night too. It is a gorgeous hotel and I would recommend anyone to stay here. The aim is to make you feel at home “somewhere you can come and sit in front of the fire and take your shoes off” obviously the fires were not on when I visited since it was summer and we were about to go through a mini heat wave but it was still a really cosy place to sit and chill.

If you are local to Bristol you can visit Backwell House for a delicious meal. They have a restaurant with a daily menu offering dishes made from local and organic produce. They even have their own vegetable garden so they definitely know where their produce is coming from as they are growing it themselves. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday to Sunday lunch with dishes created by talented chef Ross Hunter. During my stay I had one of the best meals I have had in a long time, it was so tasty. You can have lunch or dinner in the conservatory over looking the gardens, it is very light and airy the perfect place to have a meal with family.

A lovely place to have your meal

I started with Pressed Backwell Pork, New Season peas, Pancetta and a tarragon emulsion. The crackling was to die for and the peas were so fresh.

Main was 60 day Hereford sirloin, Ox cheek, alliums, oyster mushroom and a beef jus. The Ox cheek were melt in the mouth and the sirloin was cooked to perfection.

And yes I did just have a little bit of room left for dessert. I went for the strawberry cannelloni, meringue and cheddar valley strawberries. The strawberries were so juicy.

There are 9 bedrooms I stayed in the Grace room which is currently £195 per night. The bed was so luxurious and comfortable that I really didn’t want to leave I actually asked if I could move in but not sure they were keen on that idea probably because I would eat all the food. If you would like to see some more of the rooms on offer you can see here.

I loved the bathroom with the free standing bath although I cant use a bath it was nice to look at and gave the room so much character. There were some yummy smelling toiletries in the room supplied by Bramley Bath, Body and Home Inspired by a love of the British Countryside.

I had the most amazing view and as it was such a glorious evening I slept with the large Georgian window open and got woken up by the birds singing.

Unfortunately they do not have any accessible rooms and you have to go up one staircase to get to the bedrooms but there are plans to build some accessible rooms in the annex which is the next stage of development. Also next year they will have their swimming pool finished so I am definitely going back to try that out.

And if this hasn’t convinced you to book a stay at Backwell house, they have a cinema room where they are planning on doing a Sunday movie package, excellent walks nearby and a cool bar to have some local drinks in.

The hotel is near Nailsea train station and they mentioned if you contact the hotel prior to your visit they will pick you up from the station. It is also less than 10 minutes from Bristol Airport so would make a great pre holiday stay and you can leave your car and if you ask nicely they will take you to the airport if a member of staff is free.

This would make a lovely venue for a wedding, if the weather is nice then it would be perfect for an outside gathering. With only 9 rooms you could book them all for your wedding party to make it really personal.
